Myths and Facts About Veneers

A woman smiling

These days, smartphones are a constant companion for most people. Because of this, taking selfies is a common occurrence. Would you like to smile along with your friends and not be embarrassed by your teeth? Veneers, which can correct a number of smile flaws, may be able to help you do just that.

At Skyview Dentistry in Charlotte, North Carolina, we make getting a gorgeous smile easy and comfortable. Seti Byrd, DMD, Jennifer D’Silva, DDS, and David Bunn, DDS, treat their patients with kindness and compassion and provide the best care around. In this blog, they discuss what veneers are and go over some of the myths and facts about them.

What are veneers?

Veneers are very thin shells made of porcelain or resin composite materials, and they’re bonded to the fronts of your natural teeth to cover up flaws. Veneers, which usually go on the teeth you see when you smile, can do a variety of things, including the following:

  • Hide discolored teeth
  • Hide and reinforce chipped or cracked teeth
  • Hide overly small teeth
  • Hide large gaps
  • Hide irregularly shaped teeth

After completing an examination, reviewing your dental history, and discussing your goals, your dentist will determine if veneers can help you or if another option may be better.

Myths and facts about veneers

Myth: You have to get veneers for all of your front teeth

Fact: Though you can get veneers placed on all of your front teeth if you want, this versatile treatment can be used on as few or as many of your teeth as you would like. The veneers are custom-made, so if you only want to have a few teeth covered, the veneers will be tinted to match the color of your other teeth, so they’ll blend in perfectly.

Myth: Veneers stain easily

Fact: Veneers are actually stain resistant, with porcelain veneers being the most stain resistant. To keep your veneers looking great, just treat them like you would your teeth. Brush and floss every day and get professional cleanings once or twice a year.

Myth: Veneers are fragile

Fact: When people hear that veneers are wafer thin, they usually assume that they’re not very strong and will easily chip or break. However, veneers are made from extremely strong materials, and they’re especially strong once bonded to your teeth. Furthermore, veneers can last up to 20 years or longer with proper care.
